Description

This comforting dish is a twist on a classic broccoli and cheese bake, featuring tender broccoli florets and crisp bacon nestled in a rich, creamy parmesan sauce. The filling is topped with flaky, buttery puff pastry sprinkled with poppy seeds, creating a delightful contrast between the soft interior and the crunchy crust. Its a hearty, home-style meal that feels indulgent yet simple to assemble. Perfect for a cozy dinner, a potluck side, or a satisfying lunch, this recipe brings together savory bacon, sharp cheese, and mild broccoli in one harmonious bite. The puff pastry lid makes it feel special, while the ingredients remain accessible and pantry-friendly. Serve warm for the best texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 200C (400F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large frying pan over moderate heat. Add diced bacon and cook for 2 minutes until browned and crisp. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside on a paper towel.
  3. In the same pan, add thinly sliced onions and crushed garlic. Cook for 2 minutes until softened.
  4. Add broccoli florets to the pan with the onions. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring frequently, until tender but still bright green.
  5. Return the pan to heat. Add plain flour and mustard powder, stirring constantly for 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste.
  6. Gradually whisk in skim milk, ensuring no lumps form. Continue to cook and stir for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens and bubbles.
  7. Remove from heat. Stir in freshly grated parmesan and the cooked bacon until the sauce is smooth and creamy. Fold in the broccoli and onion mixture.
  8. Spoon the broccoli mixture into a baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  9. Roll out the thawed puff pastry slightly to fit the top of the dish. Place it over the filling, pressing edges down to seal.
  10. Brush the pastry with whisked egg yolk and sprinkle with poppy seeds.
  11. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and puffed. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.
