Description

This Portuguese Sweet Bread is a beloved tradition, featuring a rich, tender crumb that is slightly sweet and buttery. Made with milk, eggs, and a generous amount of sugar, it has a golden-brown crust and a soft, pillowy interior. The subtle sweetness makes it versatile, suitable for breakfast, dessert, or even sandwiches. It is an ideal centerpiece for holiday tables, particularly Easter or Christmas, where its comforting aroma fills the home. While the process involves rising time, the steps are straightforward, resulting in a bakery-quality loaf that tastes homemade. Serve it warm with a pat of butter for the ultimate indulgent experience.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a small bowl, combine yeast, warm water, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the 3 eggs until well combined.
  4. In a small saucepan, combine milk, salt, butter, and the remaining 3/4 cup sugar. Stir over low heat until the milk is warm and the butter is melted.
  5. Gradually stir the warm milk mixture into the beaten eggs.
  6. Stir in the yeast mixture and 3 cups of flour. Beat until the batter is smooth.
  7. Gradually add the remaining flour, one cup at a time, mixing until the dough is too stiff to stir.
  8. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  9. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat all sides. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place for 1.5 hours, or until doubled in bulk.
  10. Punch down the dough. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into small loaves.
  11. Place each loaf into a greased 5x3-inch loaf pan or cake pan.
  12. Cover and let rise for another 30 to 45 minutes, until doubled in size.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  14. Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack.
