Description

This classic white bread recipe delivers the comforting taste of fresh-baked goods straight from your own oven. Made with simple pantry staples like milk, butter, and yeast, it creates a loaf that is incredibly soft and slightly sweet. The dough is easy to handle, resulting in a smooth, elastic texture that rises beautifully. Perfect for sandwich bread, toast, or simply served with butter, this versatile loaf pairs well with any meal.

Directions

  1. Pour the warm water over the yeast in a large bowl.
  2. Stir well and let stand for 5 to 10 minutes until the yeast dissolves and becomes foamy.
  3. Heat the milk, stirring occasionally, until it reaches the same temperature as the yeast mixture (approx 105F).
  4. Pour the warm milk into the bowl with the dissolved yeast.
  5. Add the butter (or shortening/oil), sugar, salt, and 4 cups of the flour to the liquid mixture.
  6. Beat vigorously with a large spoon or mixer for at least 1 minute until the mixture is smooth.
  7. Stir in enough of the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, to form a stiff but not dry dough.
  8. Dust a kneading surface with 1/4 cup of the reserved flour and turn the dough out onto it, scraping the bowl clean.
  9. Knead the dough for 1 minute, sprinkling with extra flour as needed to prevent sticking.
  10. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
  11. Resume kneading for 6 to 8 minutes until the dough is smooth, elastic, and springs back when touched.
  12. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turn to coat, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours, or until doubled in bulk.
  13. Turn the risen dough out onto a lightly floured surface and punch it down to release air.
  14. Cut the dough in half and pat each half into an oval shape that fits the length of your bread pans.
  15. Place each dough piece into a lightly greased bread pan.
  16. Cover with a damp towel and let rise for another 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until doubled.
  17. Preheat the oven to 350F (177°C).
  18. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes if using glass pans, or 45 to 50 minutes if using metal pans, until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
  19. Remove from pans immediately and cool on wire racks.
