By thoroughly rinsing and soaking the rice, you remove excess starch, ensuring a non-sticky texture that is essential for authentic Indian-style preparations. The simple combination of water and optional salt allows the natural flavor of the high-quality basmati to shine through. Perfect as a side dish for curries, stews, or grilled meats, this dish is a staple in many households. It is easy to prepare, requires minimal ingredients, and provides a wholesome, vegan-friendly foundation for your dinner table. Serve it hot and fluffed with a fork for the best experience.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Place the rice in a bowl and fill with cold water.
  2. Swirl the rice with clean hands to remove starch, then carefully pour off the water.
  3. Repeat rinsing 7 to 8 times until the water runs clear.
  4. Cover the rinsed rice with 1 3/4 cups of cold water and soak for 20 to 30 minutes.
  5. Drain the soaking water if desired, or proceed directly to cooking with the soaking water.
  6. Bring the rice, water, and salt to a boil in a 2-quart pan over high heat, stirring occasionally.
  7. Once boiling, lower the heat to a simmer and partially cover the pan.
  8. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes until most water is absorbed.
  9. Place the lid firmly on the pan and remove from heat.
  10. Let the rice rest, covered, for 5 additional minutes.
  11. Fluff with a fork and serve hot.

Note

Basmati rice is known as the "fragrant one" in Hindi and is prized for its long, slender grains and nutty aroma.

Rinsing thoroughly is crucial to prevent clumping and achieve separate, fluffy grains.

Soaking the rice before cooking helps the grains lengthen and cook evenly.

If basmati is unavailable, any long-grain white rice can be used, but follow package instructions as cooking times may vary.

Salt is optional but enhances the natural flavor of the rice.
