Description

This homemade root beer tonic captures the nostalgic essence of old-fashioned sodas using a blend of dried herbs and roots. The base features sassafras bark for that classic root beer flavor, complemented by the earthy depth of dandelion and burdock roots. Dried sarsaparilla adds a smooth, licorice-like undertone, while ground ginger and cinnamon provide a warm, spicy kick. Dried orange peel brightens the profile with a subtle citrus aroma. This beverage offers a cleansing, revivifying effect, making it a perfect healthy alternative to commercial soft drinks. It is easy to prepare by simply simmering the ingredients to extract their essences. Serve it hot as a soothing herbal tea or chill it and mix with sparkling water for a refreshing iced soda. Ideal for summer gatherings or as a comforting winter warmer, this tonic is vegan, vegetarian, and free from artificial additives.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Combine all dried ingredients (sassafras bark, sarsaparilla, dandelion root, burdock root, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, and orange peel) in a bowl and mix thoroughly.
  2. Measure out 4 tablespoons of the mixed dry ingredients.
  3. In a large pot, combine the 4 tablespoons of dry mixture with 1 quart of water.
  4. Place the pot over high heat and bring the mixture to a boil.
  5. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
  6. Remove the pot from heat and let it steep for an additional 5 minutes.
  7. Strain the liquid through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a pitcher or serving vessel to remove all solid herbs.
  8. Taste the tonic and sweeten with honey or stevia if desired, stirring until dissolved.
  9. Serve warm over ice with a twist of fresh orange peel, or chill and mix with sparkling water for an iced variation.

Note

Storage: Store the unused dry herb mixture in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to preserve flavor and potency. The brewed tonic can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.

Sweetening: This recipe does not include sugar in the base mix. Adjust sweetness to your preference using honey, maple syrup, or stevia after straining.

Iced Variation: For a refreshing summer drink, chill the strained tonic in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, mix equal parts chilled tonic and sparkling water over ice.

Ingredient Note: Ensure your sassafras bark is sourced from a reputable supplier, as wild sassafras can vary in flavor intensity.

Garnish: A fresh twist of orange peel adds a nice aromatic lift to the drink.
