Description

Sarma is a beloved Eastern European staple featuring tender cabbage leaves tightly wrapped around a savory filling of ground pork, beef, and rice. This comforting dish offers a perfect balance of textures, from the soft, melt-in-your-mouth cabbage to the hearty, spiced meat mixture inside. Slow-simmered in a rich tomato and bacon broth, the flavors meld together to create a deeply satisfying meal. It is an ideal choice for family dinners, holiday gatherings, or cozy weeknight suppers. While traditionally labor-intensive, the result is a warm, home-style comfort food that pairs beautifully with crusty bread or simple sides.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Remove bruised leaves from cabbage heads and cut out the center core.
  2. Pour boiling water over the cabbages to soften the leaves for peeling.
  3. Meanwhile, saut&# 195;© chopped bacon and onion until the bacon is done.
  4. Add half of the tomato soup to the bacon and onion mixture.
  5. In a large bowl, beat eggs and add salt, pepper, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, ground beef, ground pork, and ground ham.
  6. Add the bacon mixture and cooked rice to the meat mixture and mix thoroughly.
  7. Separate the softened cabbage leaves and drain them well.
  8. Place a heaping tablespoon of the stuffing mixture at the core end of each cabbage leaf.
  9. Roll the leaves carefully, tucking in the sides to form tight rolls.
  10. Arrange the rolls in layers in a Dutch oven or heavy kettle.
  11. Chop any small unused cabbage leaves and place them over the top of the rolls.
  12. Pour the remaining tomato soup over the rolls and add enough water to cover them.
  13. Cover the pot and simmer gently for 2 to 2.5 hours until the cabbage is tender.
