Description

This hearty Sausage Plait is a comforting baked dish that combines flaky shortcrust pastry with a savory filling of seasoned sausage meat, diced tomatoes, onions, and mushrooms. The braided pastry top creates an attractive presentation while keeping the juices locked inside. It offers a perfect balance of textures, with the crisp pastry contrasting against the tender, herb-infused filling. Ideal for a substantial brunch, a casual dinner, or a picnic lunch, this recipe is straightforward to assemble and bakes to golden perfection. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400&# 194;°F (200ðC) or Gas Mark 6.
  2. Finely chop the tomatoes, onion, and mushrooms.
  3. In a bowl, mix the chopped vegetables with the sausage meat, mixed herbs, salt, and pepper.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the shortcrust pastry into a rectangle measuring approximately 12 inches by 9 inches.
  5. Transfer the pastry rectangle to a greased baking tray.
  6. Spread the sausage filling evenly down the center of the pastry rectangle.
  7. Using a sharp knife, cut the pastry on either side of the filling into 1/2 inch wide strips at an angle.
  8. Fold the pastry strips alternately over the filling from both sides to create a braided plait effect.
  9. Brush the top of the pastry with beaten egg.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and cooked through.

Note

Allow the plait to cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing to let the filling set slightly.

For a vegetarian version, replace the sausage meat with a plant-based alternative or additional mushrooms and lentils.

Ensure the pastry is not too thick when rolling to ensure it cooks evenly with the filling.

Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated in the oven.
