Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. Peel and dice potatoes. Place in a large pot, cover with salted water, and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer potatoes until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain well.
  4. While potatoes cook, brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it into small crumbles.
  5. Drain excess fat from the beef, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Add chopped tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, chopped parsley, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and brown gravy to the skillet.
  7. Stir to combine and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Add frozen peas to the meat mixture and cook for another 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  9. Return drained potatoes to the pot. Mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.
  10. Transfer the beef mixture into a baking dish or casserole.
  11. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the top of the meat mixture.
  12. Bake for 40 minutes, or until the potato topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

Note

Although traditionally made with lamb (Shepherd's Pie), this recipe uses ground beef (Cottage Pie). You can substitute ground lamb if preferred.

For extra crispy potatoes, use a fork to create peaks in the mashed potato layer before baking, or sprinkle with grated cheddar cheese.

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes or in the microwave.

If you don't have brown gravy on hand, you can make a quick gravy using beef broth, flour, and butter.

Ensure the beef is fully browned before adding the vegetables to avoid a soggy filling.
