Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Heat milk and 1 unit of butter in a saucepan until hot but not boiling.
  3. Pour the hot milk mixture into the flour mixture and beat until smooth.
  4. Add 1 cup of flour and continue to beat until incorporated.
  5. Gradually add the remaining 1 1/2 cups flour and knead on a floured surface for 5 minutes until dough is smooth and elastic.
  6. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with an inverted bowl or plastic wrap, and let rest for 15 minutes.
  7. While dough rests, melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  8. Add the finely chopped onion and cook until tender and translucent.
  9. Add chopped mushrooms, green onions, and parsley to the skillet.
  10. Continue cooking the vegetable mixture for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  11. Remove skillet from heat and set aside to cool completely.
  12. In a separate bowl, combine beaten eggs, garlic powder, chopped Monterey Jack cheese, and 2 cups of boiled shrimp.
  13. Blend the egg mixture well, then stir in the cooled onion and mushroom mixture.
  14. On a floured surface, roll the rested dough into a 12-by-24-inch rectangle.
  15. Spread the filling evenly over the center of the dough, leaving borders around the edges.
  16. Fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges tightly to seal.
  17. Shape the filled dough into a ring or braid as desired, pinching seams securely to prevent leaking.
  18. Place the shaped bread seam-side down in a greased baking pan.
  19. Cover the pan and let the bread rise in a warm place for 15 minutes.
  20. Preheat oven to 375F (190C).
  21. Bake the bread for 60 to 70 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Note

Ensure the shrimp are fully cooked and cooled before adding to the filling to prevent the dough from becoming soggy during baking.

If the dough feels too sticky while kneading, add a tablespoon of flour at a time. If too dry, add a teaspoon of milk.

For extra flavor, brush the top of the bread with melted butter immediately after removing it from the oven.
