Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a heatproof bowl, beat egg yolks and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (double boiler), ensuring the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water.
  3. Cook gently, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the Marsala wine. Allow the mixture to cool completely to room temperature.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat the mascarpone cheese until smooth and creamy.
  6. Slowly beat the cooled egg custard into the mascarpone cheese until well combined.
  7. In another clean bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form.
  8. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until no white streaks remain. Set aside.
  9. In a small dish, combine the cold coffee and brandy.
  10. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture; do not soak them too long to avoid sogginess.
  11. Line the bottom of an 8-inch baking dish or trifle bowl with a layer of dipped ladyfingers, breaking them as needed to fit.
  12. Spread half of the mascarpone cream mixture over the ladyfingers.
  13. Sprinkle half of the chopped chocolate over the cream.
  14. Repeat with another layer of dipped ladyfingers, the remaining cream, and the remaining chocolate.
  15. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, before serving.
