Ingredients

Directions

  1. Heat the milk until scalding hot, then allow it to cool to lukewarm temperature.
  2. Dissolve yeast in 2/3 cup of warm water and set aside to activate.
  3. Stir the sugar and molasses into the cooled lukewarm milk until fully dissolved.
  4. Combine the milk mixture, yeast mixture, salt, shortening, and flour in a large bowl.
  5. Mix until a stiff dough forms, adding more flour if necessary to prevent sticking.
  6. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  7. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until doubled in bulk.
  8. Punch down the risen dough to release air bubbles.
  9. Divide the dough and shape into 6 loaves.
  10. Place loaves in greased pans and let rise again until doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
  11. Bake at 375 degrees F (191&# 194;°C) for 40 minutes or until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
  12. Remove from pans and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.
