COLLECTION: Liqueur Cakes
Description
These indulgent liqueur cakes are a celebration of rich flavors and moist textures. The Kahlua Swirl Cake features a tender crumb infused with coffee liqueur and a spicy mace-kissed streusel filling, while the Banana Brunch Cake offers a comforting twist with mashed bananas and toasted coconut. Both recipes rely on the luxurious depth of Kahlua to elevate standard cake ingredients into something truly special. Perfect for afternoon tea, a festive brunch, or as a sophisticated dessert to share with friends. The coffee notes pair beautifully with the sweetness of the glaze and the crunch of nuts, making every bite a complex and satisfying experience.Ingredients
Directions
-
For the Kahlua Swirl Cake: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch fluted tube pan.
-
Prepare Streusel Filling: In a small bowl, mix 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1/3 cup chopped pecans, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp mace. Set aside.
-
Prepare Cake Batter: In a large bowl, cream 1/2 cup softened butter and 1-1/4 cups granulated sugar until fluffy. Beat in 2 eggs and 1 tsp vanilla.
-
In a separate bowl, sift together 2 cups flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 3/4 tsp baking soda, 3/4 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp mace.
-
On low speed, alternately add the flour mixture and 3/4 cup sour cream and 3/4 cup Kahlua to the butter mixture, blending well after each addition.
-
Spread 1/3 of the batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle half of the streusel filling over the batter. Top with another 1/3 of the batter, then the remaining streusel. Spread the remaining batter on top.
-
Bake for 45 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the cake is golden brown.
-
Let the cake stand in the pan for 10 minutes. Invert onto a wire rack and cool until lukewarm.
-
Prepare Glaze: While the cake cools, combine 3/4 cup powdered sugar, 2 Tbsp softened butter, and 1 Tbsp Kahlua. Beat until smooth.
-
Spoon the glaze over the top of the lukewarm cake. Decorate with pecan halves if desired.
-
For the Kahlua Banana Brunch Cake: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 10-inch tube pan well.
-
In a large bowl, cream 1 cup softened butter and 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar until fluffy.
-
Beat in 4 eggs, 1 cup mashed bananas, 1/2 cup Kahlua, and 1/4 cup milk.
-
In a separate bowl, combine 3-1/2 cups flour, 1 Tbsp baking powder, 1 tsp baking soda, and 1 tsp salt.
-
On low speed, gradually beat the flour mixture into the wet ingredients until just blended. On medium speed, beat for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl as you go.
-
Stir in 3/4 cup flaked coconut and 3/4 cup chopped walnuts.
-
Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
-
Let stand in pan for 10 minutes. Invert onto a wire rack and remove the pan. Cool completely.
-
Dust with sifted powdered sugar before serving if desired.
Note
Storage: Store cakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for longer freshness.
Variation: If you prefer a less intense coffee flavor, substitute half of the Kahlua with strong brewed coffee or milk.
Tip: For the best texture, ensure butter is softened to room temperature before creaming. Sifting flour helps ensure a lighter crumb, though it is optional if you mix gently.
Serving: These cakes pair wonderfully with a cup of coffee or tea. The Kahlua Swirl Cake is particularly good for holiday gatherings.
