Coney Burgers
Description
Coney Burgers are a hearty, nostalgic American favorite that combines the best of burgers and hot dogs. Lean ground beef is seasoned with chili powder and breadcrumbs, then wrapped tightly around split frankfurters for a unique texture. The star of the dish is the savory chili sauce, made by simmering tomatoes, green chilies, and cornstarch until thick, then folding in drained red kidney beans. Served on toasted buns and topped with shredded cheddar cheese, these burgers offer a perfect balance of spicy, savory, and creamy flavors. They are an excellent choice for game day parties, family dinners, or any occasion where you want something comforting and substantial.Ingredients
Directions
-
Preheat the broiler. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the beaten egg, 1/4 cup of the tomato-chili mixture, fine dry breadcrumbs, and 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder.
-
Add the lean ground beef to the bowl and mix thoroughly until just combined.
-
Cut each frankfurter in half lengthwise, creating eight halves.
-
Divide the meat mixture into four equal portions. Shape each portion around two frankfurter halves, covering them completely to form a bun-sized patty.
-
Place the meat-wrapped frankfurters on a rack set inside a broiler pan.
-
Broil 4 to 5 inches from the heat source for 8 to 10 minutes, turning once halfway through, until the meat is cooked through and browned.
-
While the burgers cook, prepare the sauce. In a small saucepan, combine the remaining tomato-chili mixture, cornstarch, and 1 teaspoon of chili powder.
-
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and bubbles.
-
Continue to cook and stir for 2 more minutes to ensure the cornstarch is fully cooked.
-
Stir in the drained red kidney beans and heat through for 1 minute.
-
Place the split frankfurter buns cut-side up on the broiler rack around the burgers for the last 1 to 2 minutes of cooking to toast them.
-
Serve the hot Coney Burgers in the toasted buns, topped generously with the warm bean chili sauce.
-
Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top of each burger immediately before serving so it melts slightly.
