Description

This rustic Country Casserole is a comforting one-pan meal that balances savory, sweet, and tangy flavors. Pork chops and knackwurst are nestled with caramelized onions, bright sauerkraut, and soft acorn squash, all glazed with maple syrup. The dish offers a satisfying texture contrast between the tender meat and the slightly crisp squash skin. It&# 226;€™s perfect for cold evenings or family dinners when you want something substantial yet easy to prepare. The combination of traditional German ingredients creates a warm, home-style experience that feels both novel and familiar. Serve it straight from the oven for maximum comfort.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cut the acorn squash in half lengthwise, scoop out the seeds, and cut each half into six wedges.
  3. Slice the large onion into 1/2-inch thick rounds or half-moons.
  4. Sprinkle the pork chops evenly with salt on both sides.
  5. Heat salad oil in a 12-inch skillet over high heat until shimmering.
  6. Add the pork chops to the skillet and cook until well browned on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  7. Remove the browned pork chops to a plate and set aside.
  8. In the same skillet with the remaining drippings, add the sliced onions. Cook over high heat, stirring frequently, until golden brown and tender.
  9. Pour in 1 1/4 cups of water, scraping the bottom of the skillet to loosen any browned bits.
  10. Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the maple syrup and drained sauerkraut.
  11. Spoon the sauerkraut mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  12. Using a knife, score the knackwurst sausages 3 or 4 times lengthwise to prevent bursting and allow flavor absorption.
  13. Arrange the pork chops, knackwurst, and acorn squash wedges on top of the sauerkraut mixture in the baking dish.
  14. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil.
  15. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour and 15 to 20 minutes, or until the meat and squash are tender.
  16. Halfway through cooking, baste the meat and squash with the juices from the baking dish.
  17. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving to allow flavors to settle.
