  1. Wash and pick over beans; put in mixing bowl.
  2. Cover beans with cold water and soak overnight.
  3. Next morning, put beans and water into Dutch oven and bring to a boil; reduce heat.
  4. Cover and simmer 1 hour.
  5. Stir in remaining ingredients; cover and simmer 3 hours or until tender.
  6. Add more water if necessary
