Deluxe Fruit Kugel (Tdn-9/22/93 recipe image

This Deluxe Fruit Kugel is a decadent, old-fashioned dessert that balances the creaminess of eggs and sour cream with the bright acidity of citrus and pineapple. The wide egg noodles soak up the rich custard-like mixture, creating a dense, comforting texture that holds together beautifully when sliced. The standout feature is the crunchy topping of walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon, which provides a perfect textural contrast to the soft interior. Ideal for holiday gatherings, Shabbat dinners, or as a make-ahead centerpiece for family brunches, this kugel improves in flavor after chilling overnight. It’s a show-stopping dish that feels both luxurious and deeply nostalgic.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350ðF (175ðC).
  2. Cook medium-wide noodles according to package directions until tender; drain well and place in a large bowl.
  3. In a food processor, combine the cream cheese, 1/2 pound of butter, and half of the sour cream (1 pint total sour cream is used in the full recipe context); blend until completely smooth.
  4. Scrape down the sides of the work bowl.
  5. Add the remaining sour cream, vanilla extract, 1 cup of sugar, and 8 eggs to the processor; process until fully combined and smooth.
  6. Pour the cream cheese mixture over the drained noodles and gently fold to combine.
  7. Stir in the drained mandarin oranges, crushed pineapple, and walnuts by hand.
  8. Transfer the mixture into a buttered 9x13 inch baking dish; it should be filled to the brim.
  9. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to meld and noodles to soften.
  10. When ready to bake, remove plastic wrap and place dish in the preheated oven for 50 minutes.
  11. While baking, mix the remaining walnuts (if any) or additional walnuts with 1/3 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
  12. After 50 minutes, sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar-nut mixture evenly over the top of the kugel.
  13. Dot the top with 2 tablespoons of butter.
  14. Return to oven and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and set.
  15. Allow to cool slightly before serving warm or at room temperature.
