Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 275°F (135°C).
  2. Place French bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 10 minutes, tossing once halfway through, until hard and dry but not burnt. Set aside to cool.
  3. Bring a small pot of water to a boil. Carefully lower the egg into the boiling water and cook for exactly 1 minute.
  4. Remove the egg with a slotted spoon and immediately crack it into a large salad bowl. Break it up with a fork.
  5. Rub the inside of the bowl with the cut side of the garlic clove, then add the garlic to the bowl.
  6. Add salt, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and olive oil to the bowl. Whisk or mix vigorously until the dressing is emulsified and smooth.
  7. Wash and thoroughly dry the romaine leaves and head lettuce. Tear or chop into bite-sized pieces if desired.
  8. Add the lettuce to the bowl with the dressing. Toss well to coat all leaves evenly.
  9. Season with fresh ground pepper to taste. Toss again.
  10. Arrange the salad on two dinner plates. Garnish with the toasted croutons and serve immediately.
