Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine lukewarm water and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Sprinkle the dry yeast over the top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the remaining 1/2 cup sugar, salt, and vegetable oil to the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
  3. Gradually beat in the flour, one cup at a time, mixing vigorously until the dough is thick, sticky, and cohesive.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
  5. Knead the dough with the heels of your palms for 8-10 minutes, adding small amounts of flour if necessary, until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough back in the bowl, cover with a clean tea towel, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free area until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal sections.
  8. Shape each section into a loaf and place into three well-greased loaf pans (dark pans work best for crust color).
  9. Cover the loaves loosely and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes until nearly doubled.
  10. Preheat oven to 400&# 194;°F (200ðC).
  11. Bake the loaves for 25-35 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  12. Remove loaves from the pans immediately and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Note

Storage: Store cooled bread in a paper bag or bread box at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, slice and freeze in airtight bags for up to 3 months.

Variations: You can add 1/2 lb of raisins, 1 cup of shredded cheese, or 2 packets of onion soup mix to the dough while mixing in the flour for different flavor profiles.

Tip: Ensure water is lukewarm (not hot) to avoid killing the yeast. If the yeast doesn't foam after 10 minutes, it may be inactive; discard and start with fresh yeast.

Pan Choice: Dark metal pans tend to produce a darker, crispier crust compared to light aluminum pans. Adjust baking time slightly if using glass pans.
