Description

This classic German chocolate cake features moist, tender chocolate layers paired with a distinctive sweet and nutty frosting. Unlike traditional chocolate cakes, this dessert is defined by its unique topping of toasted coconut flakes and chopped pecans bound in a rich, caramel-like custard. The combination of the deep cocoa flavor and the crunchy, chewy texture of the frosting creates a truly indulgent experience. It is a timeless treat perfect for birthday celebrations, holidays, or any special occasion where you want to impress guests with a homemade, nostalgic dessert that balances sweetness with robust chocolate notes.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177&# 194;°C).
  2. Butter 3 round layer pans, 8 or 9 inches in diameter by 1 1/2 inches high, or 2 square pans, 8x8x2 inches or 9x9x2 inches.
  3. Line bottoms of pans with wax paper and butter the paper.
  4. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over the chopped chocolate, stirring until completely melted; set aside to cool slightly.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  6. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  7. Slowly blend in the melted chocolate mixture and vanilla extract.
  8. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  9. Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beating after each addition until the batter is smooth.
  10. Gently fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites and then the chopped pecans or walnuts.
  11. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans.
  12. Bake until tops spring back when touched lightly: 8-inch rounds 35-40 minutes; 9-inch rounds 30-35 minutes; 8-inch squares 45-50 minutes; or 9-inch squares 40-45 minutes.
  13. Cool cakes in pans on wire racks for 10 minutes, then remove from pans to cool completely.
  14. To make frosting, combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter in a heavy saucepan.
  15. Cook and stir constantly over medium heat until thickened and coming to a gentle boil, about 12 minutes.
  16. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, flaked coconut, and chopped pecans.
  17. Beat with a mixer until the frosting is thick and cool enough to spread.
  18. Place the bottom cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a thick layer of frosting over the top.
  19. Repeat with the remaining layers, spreading frosting between each layer and on top of the final layer.
  20. Decorate the sides with remaining frosting if desired. Remove any wax paper strips before serving.
