Description

A hearty and comforting Indian dal made with chickpeas simmered until tender, then finished with a fragrant tempering of ghee, cumin, and asafetida. Enriched with fresh coconut, raisins, and green peas, this dish offers a perfect balance of savory, sweet, and spicy flavors. It is a nutritious, gluten-free vegetarian main course that serves as a satisfying centerpiece for any meal.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Soak chick peas for at least 2 hours.
  2. Drain & rinse.
  3. Bring to a boil in the water & add the salt & turmeric.
  4. Boil hard for 5 minutes & remove any scum that forms on the surface.
  5. Reduce heat & simmer until tender.
  6. This will take about 1 hour, but it can take longer if your peas are old.
  7. When tender, remove from the heat.
  8. Heat ghee in a large pot.
  9. Add cumin seeds, asafetida, ginger & bay leaf.
  10. Fry for a few seconds, stirring as the spices cook.
  11. Add the coconut, raisins & peas.
  12. Cook over a medium heat for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  13. Stir in the cooked chick peas, followed by the rest of the ingredients.
  14. Simmer for another 15 minutes & serve.
