Description

These Cheddar Dill Knots are a comforting twist on traditional soft rolls, combining the tangy richness of sharp cheddar with the bright, herbaceous note of fresh dill. The dough is easy to prepare, requiring just a few minutes of kneading before rising into fluffy, golden-brown knots. Each bite offers a satisfying chew and a burst of savory flavor, making them an ideal side dish for soups, stews, or as a festive appetizer. Whether served warm from the oven with a smear of butter or Dijon mustard, these homemade breads bring a rustic, homemade charm to any meal.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease two large cookie sheets.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour mixture from the roll mix package, the yeast from the foil packet, shredded cheddar cheese, and finely chopped fresh dill (or dried dill weed). Mix well.
  3. Add 1 cup of water heated to 120-130 degrees F, softened butter, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, and 1 egg to the bowl. Stir until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth, adding small amounts of flour if the dough is too sticky.
  5. Cover the dough with a large bowl or plastic wrap and let it rest for 5 minutes.
  6. Divide the dough into 20 equal pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll each piece into an 8-inch rope.
  7. Tie each rope into a loose knot. Place the knots 2 to 3 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets.
  8. Cover the sheets loosely with greased plastic wrap and a cloth towel. Let the rolls rise in a warm place for 25 minutes, or until almost doubled in size.
  9. While the rolls rise, prepare the glaze by beating together 1 egg, 1 tablespoon water, and 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard in a small bowl.
  10. Uncover the risen rolls and lightly brush them with the egg glaze.
  11. Bake for 13 to 18 minutes, or until the knots are golden brown.
  12. Remove from oven and serve warm, or allow to cool completely before storing.
