Description

These classic baked beans offer a comforting, home-style flavor that is perfect for family dinners or potlucks. Great Northern or Navy beans are simmered until tender, then baked slowly with a robust mixture of molasses, tomato juice, and spices. The result is a dish with a thick, glossy sauce and deep, savory notes balanced by sweetness. The low-and-slow baking method ensures the beans become incredibly tender while absorbing all the flavors from the onions, mustard, and cayenne. This recipe is a timeless favorite that brings warmth and satisfaction to any table, serving as a hearty vegan main or a delicious side dish.

Note

Bacon is mentioned in the original directions but the dish is tagged as Vegan. Omit the bacon for a vegan version, or include it for a traditional non-vegetarian variation.

Ensure you use enough water during the baking process; baked beans should have a saucy consistency. Add water a little at a time if the mixture looks too dry.

Great Northern beans and Navy beans are interchangeable in this recipe.
