  1. Shred cabbage.
  2. Cover cabbage and onion with boiling water.
  3. Let stand 10 minutes.
  4. Place butter or broken bacon slices in the bottom of a kettle.
  5. Add drained cabbage with onion, apples and tomatoes.
  6. Remove seeds from tomatoes first.
  7. Seed will give a bitter taste to the cabbage.
  8. Add sugar and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes.
  9. Salt while cooking.
