Description

This light spaghetti sauce offers a healthier twist on classic Italian cooking by using extra lean ground beef and ground turkey instead of richer meats. The sauce is built with a robust base of crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and a splash of red wine for depth. Aromatics like chopped onion, celery, red pepper, and garlic provide a savory foundation, while dried oregano, basil, and thyme add authentic Mediterranean fragrance. The result is a hearty, protein-packed sauce that is aromatic and satisfying without being heavy.

Directions

  1. Place the ground beef and ground turkey in a large kettle or Dutch oven over medium-low heat.
  2. Cook the meat slowly, breaking it up with a spoon, until fully browned.
  3. Pour off any accumulated fat from the pan.
  4. Blot the meat with several thicknesses of paper towels to remove excess grease.
  5. Return the pan to the heat and sauté the chopped onion briefly until softened.
  6. Add the garlic, red pepper, and celery; sauté for another minute until fragrant.
  7. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, and red wine.
  8. Add the dried oregano, basil, thyme, bay leaves, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce.
  9. Stir the mixture well to combine all ingredients thoroughly.
  10. Cover the pot and simmer gently for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  11. Remove from heat and allow the sauce to cool at room temperature.
