Description

This Mississippi Mud Pie is the ultimate comfort dessert, combining a crunchy nut-studded crust with a luscious, cool cream cheese layer and a thick, glossy chocolate pudding topping. The contrast between the crisp toasted pecans and walnuts, the smooth tangy filling, and the rich cocoa finish creates a texture profile that is simply irresistible. ItâÂÂs a show-stopping treat perfect for potlucks, family gatherings, or any special occasion where you want to impress your guests. Unlike traditional baked pies, this version requires no baking of the filling, making it an easy yet elegant choice for warmer months. The deep chocolate flavor is balanced perfectly by the sweetness of the confectioners' sugar and the richness of the butter, ensuring every bite is satisfying without being overwhelming.

Directions

  1. Preheat oven according to package instructions for the pie crusts. Bake the two 9-inch pie crusts until golden brown and crisp.
  2. While the crusts are baking, mix the chopped roasted pecans and walnuts together in a small bowl.
  3. Once the crusts are baked, divide the nut mixture evenly over the bottom of each crust. Allow the crusts to cool completely on a wire rack.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, sour cream, confectioners' sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract using an electric mixer until smooth and well blended.
  5. Divide the cream cheese filling evenly between the two cooled pie crusts. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  6. Refrigerate the pies for at least 2 hours to set the filling.
  7. While the filling chills, prepare the chocolate topping. In a small bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, cornstarch, flour, cocoa powder, salt, and milk until smooth. Set aside.
  8. In a medium saucepan, combine the remaining milk and the remaining granulated sugar. Bring to a boil over high heat, whisking constantly.
  9. Once boiling, slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the bowl containing the egg yolk and cocoa mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
  10. Transfer the combined mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture returns to a boil and thickens.
  11. Continue to cook and stir for 5 minutes to ensure the starch is fully cooked and the pudding is thick.
  12. Remove from heat. Stir in the butter, vanilla extract, and almond extract until fully incorporated.
  13. Allow the chocolate topping to cool slightly until it is warm but not hot.
  14. Spoon the chocolate topping evenly over the chilled cream cheese filling in each pie.
  15. Refrigerate the pies again until ready to serve, allowing the topping to set completely.
