Description

This Orange-Almond Sour Cream Cake is a sophisticated yet comforting dessert that balances bright citrus notes with the richness of chocolate and the nutty depth of toasted almonds. The sour cream ensures an incredibly moist crumb, while the orange-flavored liqueur and orange flower water add a fragrant, floral complexity. Brushed with a warm orange syrup, the cake becomes even more tender and flavorful. It is perfect for holiday gatherings, afternoon tea, or as a special treat for weekend brunch. Serve it at room temperature to fully appreciate the delicate aromas and textures.

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 6-cup fluted tube pan (Bundt pan) and set aside.
  2. Mix the chocolate mini-morsels and orange-flavored liqueur in a small bowl. Add the cake flour and toss to coat the chips thoroughly. Set aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs, a portion of the sour cream, and the orange flower water (or vanilla extract) until combined. Set aside.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the remaining cake flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground almonds, and orange zest. Mix at very low speed until just blended.
  5. Add the softened butter and the remaining sour cream to the dry ingredients. Beat at low speed until the dry ingredients are moistened.
  6. Increase speed to medium and beat for 1 1/2 minutes to aerate the batter and develop the cake's structure.
  7. Gradually beat in the egg mixture, one-third at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl as necessary to ensure everything is incorporated.
  8. Gently stir in the chocolate chip mixture with a spatula until evenly distributed.
  9. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the surface with a spatula.
  10. Bake until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean and the center springs back when touched, 40 to 45 minutes.
  11. While the cake is baking, prepare the syrup: In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, orange juice, and orange-flavored liqueur. Bring to a boil and simmer until the sugar dissolves, about 1 minute. Remove from heat.
  12. Transfer the cake in its pan to a wire rack. Immediately prick the entire cake top with a toothpick.
  13. Brush the top of the hot cake with half of the warm syrup.
  14. Cool the cake in the pan for 10 minutes.
  15. Remove the cake from the pan and place it, rounded side up, on a cake plate.
  16. Brush the cake surface with the remaining syrup. Cool completely before serving.

Note

Wrap and store at room temperature for up to 3 days, refrigerate for up to 7 days, or freeze for up to 2 months. Bring the cake to room temperature before serving for the best texture and flavor.

Orange flower water is distilled from orange blossoms and can be purchased at liquor stores, pharmacies, and Middle Eastern or Indian food markets. If unavailable, you may substitute with an equal amount of vanilla extract.

Ensure the almonds are toasted, cooled, and ground fine before adding to the batter to distribute flavor evenly without making the cake dense.
