Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Cook ziti pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  4. Add chopped onion, garlic, and fennel seeds. Sauté until onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.
  5. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 1 minute to deepen the flavor.
  6. Add tomato sauce, water, oregano, and sage. Stir to combine.
  7. Simmer the sauce for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
  8. Stir 1/4 cup of the grated Parmesan cheese into the sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese and egg. Mix until smooth.
  10. In a large bowl, toss the cooked ziti with the tomato sauce to coat evenly.
  11. Butter a 9x13-inch glass baking dish.
  12. Layer half of the sauced ziti in the bottom of the baking dish.
  13. Spread the ricotta mixture evenly over the ziti.
  14. Add the remaining ziti on top.
  15. Sprinkle the remaining Parmesan cheese and all the mozzarella cheese over the top.
  16. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  17. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
