Description

This authentic Italian-style lasagna is the ultimate comfort food, perfect for family gatherings or Sunday dinners. It features a deeply flavorful meat sauce simmered with garlic, onions, and aromatic herbs like basil and oregano. The layers are bound together by a creamy cottage cheese and egg mixture, topped with generous amounts of melted mozzarella and a sprinkle of sharp parmesan. Each bite offers a satisfying balance of savory tomato sauce, tender noodles, and rich cheese.

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large heavy saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and garlic; sauté for about 5 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  4. Stir in the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through.
  5. Add the salt, canned tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, basil, oregano, sugar, and dried parsley to the meat mixture.
  6. Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Meanwhile, cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions in boiling water. Add a tablespoon of oil to the water while cooking to prevent sticking.
  8. Drain the noodles, rinse them with cool water to stop the cooking process, and lay them out flat on a towel or plate to cool slightly.
  9. In a mixing bowl, combine the cottage cheese and eggs; mix well until blended.
  10. Grease a 13 x 9.5 x 3 inch baking pan.
  11. Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
  12. Arrange a layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  13. Spread a layer of the cottage cheese and egg mixture over the noodles.
  14. Sprinkle a layer of sliced or shredded mozzarella cheese over the cottage cheese mixture.
  15. Repeat the layers of noodles, cottage cheese mixture, and mozzarella until all ingredients are used, finishing with a top layer of noodles and meat sauce.
  16. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan or Romano cheese evenly over the top layer.
  17. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  18. Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
