Crispy sheets of phyllo dough are layered with melted butter to create a golden, shattering crust. Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Melt the butter or margarine in a small saucepan or microwave.
  3. Brush the sides and bottom of a 13x9-inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.
  4. Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the bottom of the dish; brush with melted butter.
  5. Repeat with five more sheets of phyllo, brushing each sheet with butter. Keep remaining phyllo covered with a damp towel to prevent drying.
  6. In a large bowl, combine the diced cooked chicken, crumbled bacon, thawed broccoli, and shredded cheese.
  7. Spread the chicken mixture evenly over the phyllo layers in the baking dish.
  8. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, light cream (or evaporated milk), milk, salt, and pepper.
  9. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the chicken and vegetable filling.
  10. Cover the filling with one sheet of phyllo dough; brush with melted butter.
  11. Repeat with the remaining phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter.
  12. Brush the top layer generously with the remaining melted butter.
  13. Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes, or until the phyllo is golden brown and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  14. Let stand for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Note

Phyllo dough dries out quickly. Keep unused sheets covered with a damp towel while assembling the dish.

If you don't have light cream, you can use half-and-half or extra milk.

For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and chicken, and add extra cheese or sautéed mushrooms to the filling.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven to maintain crispiness.
