Note
Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently with a splash of milk or water to restore creaminess.
Substitutions: Use unsalted butter instead of margarine for a richer flavor. If fresh basil or parsley is unavailable, use 1 teaspoon of dried basil and 1 teaspoon of dried parsley, but add them during the heating stage to release their oils.
Variations: For added protein and texture, stir in 1 cup of sautéed sliced mushrooms or steamed broccoli florets along with the cheese. You can also add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a subtle kick of heat.
Tip: Reserve a small amount of pasta water before draining. If the sauce seems too dry after tossing with cheese, add a tablespoon of the starchy water to help emulsify and loosen the coating.
