Note
Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. For longer storage, freeze the dough balls or baked cookies for up to 3 months.
For extra chocolate flavor, add 1/3 cup of cocoa powder to the dry ingredients. You can also substitute chocolate chips with chopped nuts, white chocolate chips, or butterscotch chips.
To make chocolate chip bars, spread the batter evenly into a greased 15.5x10.5-inch jelly-roll pan. Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool completely before cutting into bars.
If baking at high altitudes, increase flour to 2 2/3 cups, decrease baking soda to 3/4 teaspoon, and reduce both sugars to 2/3 cup each. Add 1/2 teaspoon of water with the flour. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes.
Ensure butter is softened to room temperature for proper creaming. Do not overbake; cookies will continue to set as they cool on the pan.
