Note
Poppy Seeds: If you cannot find ground poppy seeds, you can grind whole poppy seeds in a coffee grinder or spice mill. Do not grind them into a powder; a coarse meal is preferred for texture.
Dough Consistency: The dough should be soft but manageable. If it feels too sticky during kneading, add flour one tablespoon at a time. If it feels too dry, add a teaspoon of milk.
Storage: Store leftovers wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze the unfilled dough rolls after the first rise, or freeze the baked bread once completely cooled.
Filling Variation: Some traditional recipes include a small amount of butter or oil in the poppy seed filling for extra richness. You can also add a pinch of cinnamon or vanilla extract to the filling for additional flavor depth.
