In a mixing bowl, combine the ground poppy seeds, cream, honey, vanilla, and lemon peel. Grind or mix for 15 minutes until smooth and well combined.
7 Add the cooled wheat, crushed walnuts, chopped almonds, soaked currants, fig strips, and date strips to the poppy seed mixture.
8 Mix everything well and transfer to a serving bowl. Decorate with whole almonds and chill before serving.

Preparation time is approximately 6 hours due to soaking, plus active cooking time.
Ensure wheat is cooked until tender but retains some chew; it should not be mushy.
Poppy seeds can be ground in a food processor or mortar and pestle for a finer texture.
For a non-alcoholic version, substitute rum with additional honey or fruit juice for soaking currants.
Can be served warm or chilled; flavor improves after resting for several hours.
