Note
The term "Pasty" (often spelled with a 'y') refers to the traditional hand pies eaten by Cornish miners, which were brought to Michigan's Upper Peninsula by miners in the late 19th century.
To prevent the potatoes from turning dark (oxidizing) while preparing the rest of the ingredients, you can toss them in a little lemon juice or vinegar before mixing with the other filling ingredients.
Ensure the filling is not too wet; excess moisture can make the crust soggy. If using rutabaga, peel it thoroughly as the skin is bitter.
These pasties can be frozen before baking. Place them on a baking sheet, freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, adding about 10-15 minutes to the baking time.
Traditionally, pasties were marked with the initials of the miner on the crimped edge so they could be identified in the mines.
