For best flavor, use freshly grated nutmeg rather than pre-ground.
If you prefer a richer sauce, substitute heavy cream for half of the milk.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove, adding a splash of milk if the sauce has thickened too much.
