Storage: Taramosalata is best served fresh but can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 2 days. The texture may become slightly denser after chilling; let it come to room temperature before serving.
Ingredient Note: Traditional taramosalata uses only bread, roe, oil, and lemon. Heavy cream is a modern variation for extra richness. For a lighter version, omit the cream and add a little more olive oil or water.
Substitution: If you cannot find smoked cod roe (tarama), you can substitute with smoked herring roe (bakalar), though the flavor and color will differ. Ensure the roe is high quality and properly smoked for the best taste.
Tip: To achieve the perfect smooth consistency, ensure the bread is well-squeezed but not bone dry. If the mixture is too thick, add a teaspoon of water or lemon juice. If too thin, add a bit more soaked bread.
