It is traditional in the South to use bourbon, but rye whiskey may also be used for a spicier flavor profile.
This confection is an early Southern version of chocolate truffles, which became popular in the 1980s. Unlike traditional truffles, these are made with cocoa powder rather than melted chocolate.
If the mixture is too dry to hold together, add a teaspoon of bourbon or water at a time. If it is too wet, add a bit more confectioner's sugar.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. They can also be frozen for longer storage.
