Directions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the sourdough starter, beaten egg, and milk.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the whole wheat flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  3. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough briefly until it forms a smooth ball. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky, but keep it soft.
  5. Cover the dough and let it rise for 30 minutes.
  6. Divide the dough into 4 equal parts.
  7. Shape each part into a ball.
  8. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each ball into an 8-inch circle.
  9. Cut each circle into quarters, creating 16 triangular pieces.
  10. Heat 1 1/2 inches of salad oil in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches 400°F (204°C).
  11. Carefully lower one piece of dough into the hot oil.
  12. As soon as the dough floats to the surface, immediately turn it over using a slotted spatula.
  13. Fry for about 2 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown on both sides.
  14. Remove the bread with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  15. Repeat with remaining dough pieces. Serve warm.
