Description

These homemade cinnamon rolls are the ultimate comfort food, featuring a tender, pillowy dough enriched with milk and shortening. The filling is a decadent mix of brown sugar, warm cinnamon, chopped walnuts, and plump raisins, offering a delightful contrast in textures with every bite. Once baked to a golden brown, they are slathered in a sweet, tangy icing made with powdered sugar, butter, and a splash of fresh orange juice. Perfect for a lazy weekend breakfast, a holiday brunch, or as a special treat with coffee, these rolls bring a nostalgic, bakery-style quality to your kitchen. The aroma alone will fill your home with warmth and sweetness.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Pour warm water into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Sprinkle yeast over the water and stir until dissolved. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Blend in warm milk, shortening, sugar, and salt.
  4. Add 3 cups of flour and beat until smooth.
  5. Add enough remaining flour to form a soft, workable dough.
  6. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.
  7. Transfer dough to a large oiled bowl, turning once to coat all surfaces.
  8. Cover with a damp towel and let rise in a warm, draft-free area until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  9. Grease two large baking sheets.
  10. Punch dough down and turn out onto a lightly floured surface.
  11. Roll dough into a 12x18-inch rectangle.
  12. Spread with softened butter.
  13. Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar, chopped walnuts or pecans, raisins, and cinnamon.
  14. Starting from one long edge, roll dough up tightly like a jelly roll.
  15. Cut into slices slightly over 1 inch thick.
  16. Arrange on prepared baking sheets, tucking the ends of the dough under each roll.
  17. Let stand in a warm, draft-free area until doubled in volume, about 40 minutes.
  18. Preheat oven to 350F (177C).
  19. Bake rolls until golden brown, about 25 to 30 minutes.
  20. Meanwhile, prepare icing: Combine powdered sugar, butter, vanilla, almond extract, and fresh orange juice in a small bowl.
  21. Beat at high speed until smooth, using only enough orange juice to form a spreadable icing.
  22. Frost rolls while still hot. Serve warm or at room temperature.
