Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F (175C). Line a greased jelly roll pan (15x10 inches) with wax paper.
  2. In a saucepan over low heat, melt butter and 4 oz semisweet chocolate together. Remove from heat.
  3. Stir sugar and well-beaten eggs into the melted chocolate mixture.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Beat this dry mixture into the chocolate mixture until smooth.
  5. Add vanilla extract and mix well.
  6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the cake springs back when lightly touched. It should be soft, not crisp.
  8. Turn out the brownie shell onto a rack and let it cool completely.
  9. For the filling: Combine 12 oz semisweet chocolate and 1/4 cup strong coffee in the top of a double boiler. Melt over hot water, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat.
  10. In a separate bowl, beat 2 egg yolks until pale yellow. Stir in a small amount of the warm chocolate mixture to temper the eggs.
  11. Return the egg yolk mixture to the chocolate in the double boiler pan. Stir constantly until smooth.
  12. Gradually stir in 1/4 cup coffee liqueur. Let the mixture cool to room temperature.
  13. In a clean bowl, beat 2 egg whites until foamy. Gradually add 3 tbsp sugar and beat until stiff peaks form.
  14. Whip 1/4 cup heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
  15. Fold the whipped cream into the cooled chocolate mixture. Then, gently fold in the beaten egg whites.
  16. Invert the cooled brownie shell onto a clean towel and peel off the wax paper.
  17. Line the bottom and sides of a greased 9-inch square baking dish with the brownie shell. Cut strips for the sides and a 9-inch square for the bottom.
  18. Pour the chocolate filling into the cake-lined dish. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 3 to 4 hours, or until firm.
  19. For the glaze: Combine 4 oz semisweet chocolate and 3 tbsp strong coffee in the top of a double boiler. Melt over hot water, stirring until smooth.
  20. Place a serving platter upside down over the chilled dessert dish. Invert both to release the dessert onto the platter.
  21. Pour the chocolate glaze over the dessert, coating it evenly.
  22. Let the glaze set slightly. Decorate with chocolate curls if desired.
  23. Cut into very thin slices to serve.
