Directions
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a baking sheet.
-
In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
-
Beat in the 3 eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Beat until the mixture is thick and pale.
-
Mix in the anise extract.
-
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and crushed aniseed.
-
Gradually beat the dry ingredients into the butter mixture until a sticky dough forms.
-
Divide the dough in half. With floured hands, pat each half into a 14-by-4 inch rectangle on the prepared baking sheet.
-
Whisk the remaining egg and milk to make an egg wash. Brush the tops of the rectangles generously with the egg wash.
-
Bake in the upper third of the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
-
Remove from oven. Cut the rectangles diagonally crosswise into 3/4-inch slices.
-
Turn the slices on their sides on the baking sheet.
-
Bake for 5 minutes. Turn the slices again and bake for another 5 minutes.
-
Transfer slices to wire racks to cool completely.
Note
Store cooled Anise Slices in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 weeks.
If you prefer a stronger anise flavor, you can increase the amount of crushed aniseed.
