Description

These Anise Slices are a delightful twist on traditional biscotti, offering a perfect balance of crunch and subtle sweetness. The dough is rich with butter and eggs, creating a tender crumb that crisps up beautifully during the double-baking process. The star ingredient, anise extract, is complemented by crushed anise seeds for a burst of aromatic flavor that lingers on the palate. These cookies have a distinct pale golden color and a firm, snap-worthy texture. They are ideal served with coffee or tea, making them a wonderful treat for afternoon gatherings or holiday gift baskets. Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a baking sheet.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the 3 eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Beat until the mixture is thick and pale.
  4. Mix in the anise extract.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and crushed aniseed.
  6. Gradually beat the dry ingredients into the butter mixture until a sticky dough forms.
  7. Divide the dough in half. With floured hands, pat each half into a 14-by-4 inch rectangle on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Whisk the remaining egg and milk to make an egg wash. Brush the tops of the rectangles generously with the egg wash.
  9. Bake in the upper third of the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Remove from oven. Cut the rectangles diagonally crosswise into 3/4-inch slices.
  11. Turn the slices on their sides on the baking sheet.
  12. Bake for 5 minutes. Turn the slices again and bake for another 5 minutes.
  13. Transfer slices to wire racks to cool completely.

Note

Store cooled Anise Slices in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 weeks.

If you prefer a stronger anise flavor, you can increase the amount of crushed aniseed.
