Crumpets
Description
These homemade crumpets are a delightful departure from standard toast, offering a unique texture that is crisp on the outside and incredibly soft and spongy within. Made with a simple yeast batter, they develop distinctive holes on top that act as perfect reservoirs for melted butter, marmalade, or savory spreads. Ideal for a cozy weekend brunch or a quick breakfast treat, these little rounds bring a touch of British tradition to your kitchen. They are surprisingly easy to make, requiring only basic pantry staples like flour, milk, and yeast. Enjoy them warm, straight from the griddle, for the best flavor and texture experience.Ingredients
Directions
-
Dissolve the sugar in the warm water in a medium bowl, then sprinkle the yeast over the surface.
-
Let the mixture stand for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy and bubbly.
-
Whisk in the lukewarm milk, egg, salt, and flour until a smooth, thick batter forms.
-
Cover the bowl loosely with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the batter has doubled in volume and is very bubbly.
-
Heat a griddle or heavy skillet over medium heat and grease it lightly with butter or oil.
-
Grease the insides of four to six 3-inch crumpet rings or flan rings and place them on the hot griddle.
-
Gently stir the risen batter to deflate it slightly, then pour about 2 tablespoons of batter into each ring.
-
Cook for 1 to 2 minutes until large bubbles form on the surface and the bottoms are golden brown.
-
Remove the rings and carefully flip the crumpets to brown the other side for another 1 to 2 minutes.
-
Repeat the process with the remaining batter, greasing the rings between batches.
-
Serve immediately with butter, jam, or marmalade while still warm.
