Drained Yogurt
Description
Transform ordinary plain yogurt into a luxuriously thick and creamy strained yogurt, often referred to as Greek yogurt or labneh. This simple preparation removes excess whey, resulting in a rich, tangy product with a dense texture that is perfect for snacking, spreading on toast, or using as a healthy substitute for sour cream and mayo. It requires no cooking, just patience and a strainer. Ideal for breakfast bowls, savory dips, or as a cooling condiment for spicy dishes, this versatile staple adds protein and probiotics to your diet. Keep it in the fridge for up to a week for maximum freshness and flavor.Ingredients
Directions
-
Line a fine-mesh strainer with cheesecloth or a clean, thin coffee filter.
-
Place the strainer over a large bowl or measuring cup, ensuring there is enough space below to catch the liquid whey.
-
Pour the plain, natural yogurt into the lined strainer. Ensure the yogurt contains no gelatin or added starch for best results.
-
Cover the strainer loosely with plastic wrap or an inverted plastic bag to protect it from contaminants.
-
Place the setup in the refrigerator to drain for 8 hours or overnight.
-
Remove the strainer from the fridge. The yogurt should have thickened significantly, reducing in volume by about half.
-
Transfer the thickened yogurt to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator. Discard or save the whey for other uses.
