Description

This classic Southern Fried Pie is the ultimate comfort food, combining a rich, warm chocolate-cocoa custard with a tender, flaky crust made from simple biscuit mix. The filling cooks down into a thick, indulgent pudding that stays gooey inside the sealed pastry. Fried until golden brown and crisp, these pies offer a perfect contrast of textures: the crunchy exterior gives way to the soft, sweet interior. Finished with a dusting of powdered sugar, they are best served warm. Ideal for family gatherings, potlucks, or a quick weekend dessert, this recipe transforms pantry staples into a nostalgic treat that feels both homemade and luxurious.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, and cocoa powder.
  2. Stir in 1/2 cup milk and the butter or margarine.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thickened and bubbly.
  4. Continue to cook and stir for 1 minute more.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. Let the filling cool slightly.
  6. In a large mixing bowl, combine the biscuit mix and the remaining 1/2 cup milk.
  7. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  8. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured surface and knead gently for 12 strokes.
  9. Roll the dough out to slightly less than 1/8-inch thickness.
  10. Cut the dough into twelve 4-inch circles using a round cutter or glass.
  11. Place about 1 tablespoon of the chocolate filling in the center of each dough circle.
  12. Brush the edge of each dough circle with a little water.
  13. Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape.
  14. Press the edges together firmly with the tines of a fork to seal.
  15. In a large skillet, heat the cooking oil to 375F (190C).
  16. Fry the pies, several at a time, for about 2 minutes or until golden brown, turning once.
  17. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
  18. Sprinkle the warm pies with sifted powdered sugar before serving.
