Directions

  1. In a saucepan, combine butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup.
  2. Cook and stir over medium heat until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved.
  3. Pour the mixture into a large mixing bowl and let it cool for 5 minutes.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, cinnamon, ginger, baking soda, and cloves.
  5. Add the beaten egg and vanilla to the cooled butter mixture; mix well.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and beat until well mixed and a dough forms.
  7. Divide the dough in half, cover, and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours or overnight.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. For each bear, shape the dough into one 1-inch ball, one 3/4-inch ball, six 1/2-inch balls, and five 1/4-inch balls.
  10. On an ungreased cookie sheet, flatten the 1-inch ball to 1/2-inch thickness for the body.
  11. Attach the 3/4-inch ball to the body for the head, and flatten it slightly to 1/2-inch thickness.
  12. Attach two 1/2-inch balls for arms, two for legs, and two for ears.
  13. Place one 1/4-inch ball on the head for the nose.
  14. Arrange the remaining four 1/4-inch balls atop the ends of the arms and legs to form paws.
  15. Use miniature chocolate pieces for the eyes and navel.
  16. Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until set.
  17. Remove from oven and cool completely on a wire rack.
  18. If desired, pipe on bow ties using Decorator Icing once cookies are cool.
