Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400F (200C).
  2. In a large skillet, melt the margarine over medium heat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and mushrooms, sauting until softened.
  4. Add the ground round to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned and no longer pink.
  5. Remove the skillet from heat. Stir in 1/2 cup of sour cream, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, the black pepper, and a dash of nutmeg. Set the filling aside to cool slightly.
  6. In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, remaining 1 teaspoon of salt, and sugar.
  7. Cut the shortening into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  8. Beat the egg yolk with the remaining 1 cup of sour cream, then add this mixture to the flour. Mix gently until the dough comes together.
  9. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Roll the dough out to about 1/8-inch thickness.
  10. Use a round cutter (or a small bowl) to cut out 18 circles from the dough.
  11. Place one heaping teaspoon of the meat filling in the center of each dough circle.
  12. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges firmly with a fork dipped in flour to seal.
  13. Beat the egg white with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush this mixture over the top of each pie.
  14. Bake on a baking sheet for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and flaky.
  15. Serve immediately while warm.
