Description

This traditional Indian dish, Khatte Channe, is a vibrant and tangy chickpea curry that balances the sourness of tamarind with the warmth of garam masala and cumin. The chickpeas are simmered in a rich, aromatic gravy made from sautéed onions, garlic, ginger, and tomatoes until tender and flavorful. The result is a hearty, comforting meal that is perfect for weeknight dinners or when you want a satisfying, plant-based main course. Serve it hot with poori or rice for a complete meal.

Directions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add thinly sliced onions and fry for 20 minutes, stirring constantly until golden brown.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for 2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Stir in turmeric and red pepper, cooking for 30 seconds.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and grated ginger, cooking for 5 minutes until the oil separates from the gravy.
  6. Stir in tamarind paste and 1 cup of chick pea stock (or water).
  7. Cover and simmer gently for 15 minutes.
  8. Add cooked chickpeas, garam masala, and ground cumin.
  9. Cook uncovered for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  10. Taste and add salt as needed.
  11. Garnish with raw onion slices and shredded green chilies before serving.
