Description

This Malu Hodhi is a classic Goan fish curry that balances the richness of coconut milk with the warmth of turmeric, fennel, and paprika. Firm white fish fillets are gently simmered in a vibrant, aromatic sauce infused with caramelized onions, garlic, and fresh tomatoes. The result is a tender, flaky fish bathed in a creamy yet tangy broth, finished with a bright squeeze of lime. It is a comforting, flavorful dish perfect for weeknight dinners or special family gatherings. Pair it with steamed rice or bread to soak up every delicious drop of the sauce. Simple ingredients come together to create a restaurant-quality meal that feels like home.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Cut the fish into 8 even-sized pieces.
  2. Wash the fish pieces well, pat them dry with paper towels, and sprinkle with salt and turmeric. Set aside to marinate while you prepare the sauce.
  3. Slice the onion and tomatoes. Crush the garlic cloves. Lightly crush the whole cloves and cardamom pods to release their aromatics.
  4. Heat the oil in a large pot or deep skillet over medium heat.
  5. Add the sliced onion, crushed garlic, curry leaves, whole cloves, and cardamom pods. Sauté until the onions are soft and translucent.
  6. Add the sliced tomatoes and cook for a few minutes until they begin to break down and soften.
  7. Add the cinnamon stick, chilli powder, paprika, coriander powder, and fennel powder. Stir well and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  8. Pour in the coconut milk and stir to combine with the spice mixture.
  9. Gently add the marinated fish pieces into the simmering sauce.
  10. Bring the liquid to a gentle boil, then immediately lower the heat to a simmer.
  11. Cover and simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork. Avoid stirring vigorously to keep the fish intact.
  12. Remove the cinnamon stick and discard.
  13. Transfer the curry to a serving dish. Squeeze fresh lime juice over the top just before serving.
