Description

This decadent dessert features a crisp, sweet meringue crust filled with a luscious chocolate mousse. The filling is incredibly light and airy, achieved by folding whipped egg whites and heavy cream into melted semi-sweet chocolate. Topped with sweetened whipped cream and a garnish of shaved chocolate, it offers a delightful contrast of textures. Perfect for birthdays, holidays, or any special occasion where you want to impress guests with a homemade treat that looks elegant but comes together with simple techniques.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350&# 194;°F (175ðC). Grease a 10-inch pie plate lightly.
  2. In a large bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff peaks form. Gradually add sugar, beating until glossy and stiff.
  3. Spread meringue mixture into the pie plate, shaping it to form a crust with raised edges. Bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden. Cool completely.
  4. While crust cools, melt 6 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips in a microwave or double boiler. Let cool slightly.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat 2 egg yolks. Gradually whisk into the cooled melted chocolate until smooth.
  6. In a clean bowl, beat 1/2 pint (8 oz) heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
  7. Gently fold the whipped cream into the chocolate mixture until combined.
  8. Pour the chocolate mousse into the cooled meringue crust. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to set.
  9. Whip the remaining 1/2 pint heavy cream with 2 tablespoons sugar until stiff peaks form.
  10. Spread or pipe the sweetened whipped cream over the set chocolate filling.
  11. Garnish with shaved chocolate just before serving.

For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet.

Use pasteurized eggs if you are concerned about raw egg yolks in the mousse.
